Adam’s sin not only made him guilty before God, but made all of his descendents guilty before God as if they had eaten from the Tree themselves.
Not only did Adam’s sin make all of humanity guilty before God, Adam became completely and totally depraved. He lost his righteousness and took on a sinful nature. Through procreation, each person inherited a depraved and corrupt state from Adam.
If Romans 5 does not clearly teach Original Sin, does the second premise verify it?
This premise is often referred to as “fallen nature” or “sin nature”. Taken to its extreme, this doctrine is defined as “total depravity”.
Total Depravity is essentially a Calvinist doctrine that is built on Original Sin Doctrine. Since man is born corrupt and evil he is completely depraved. He is so depraved in fact, that he cannot even choose to place faith in Christ. Therefore, God has to choose people individually for salvation. Otherwise, no one would be saved.
What scripture is used to defend a “fallen nature” or “total depravity”?
Ephesians 2:1 → “dead in tresspasses and sins”
Who’s tresspasses and sins were they? → “You hath he quickened”
Each individual is guilty of individual sin that separates them eternally from God.
However, Christ has taken care of the sin problem. Now it is a matter of accepting the gift.
Romans 5:12 → We have already refuted this verse.
1 John 1:8-10 → This verse is used when one fails to rightly divide.
John is writing to Jewish believers. (Israel must repent from their sins.)
Romans 3:10-18 → Once again, this is a failure to look at context.
This is a quote from Psalms 14 → This context speaks to a day when all men are
wicked in the last days.
What about Romans 7?
V14 → “spiritual” = not of human origin, handed down by God
“carnel” = (sarkeekos) flesh, human [Paul is a man, he is suseptible to sin]
Adam sinned before he was cursed and cast out of the garden.
“sold” = (piprasko) traveling in (in a world of sin)
V15 → “dwelleth” = (oikeo) housed, dwelling
When Adam sinned, the world was cursed.
“By one man sin entered into the world and death by sin…”
“And so death passed to all men”
Adam’s actions caused death to pass to all men.
The descendents from Adam inherit a location problem, they are separated from God and from everlasting life.
Their lives will eventually end and they will have never experienced being in the physical presence of God. [Spiritual death is not the best term to use.]
Before Christ, man’s only hope of being reunited with God was through the Israel Covenant.
He would still die, but he had a hope of a resurrection.
But now, Christ has come and man is offered a salvation that overcomes both death and sin.
