Verse 1 → “The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew
them a sign from heaven.”
Mark 8:10 → “And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of
Dalmanutha.”
Dalmanutha → On the west side of the Sea of Galilee, near Magdala
“And tempting…that he would shew…a sign from heaven”
“Tempting” → (piradzo) last seen in ch. 4 [Satan tempting Jesus]
To test, examine, to try; in a negative context
They were not asking in hope or anticipation. (Not like Gideon or Hezekiah; malicious)
Jesus was giving signs in accordance with God's will.
God had given them plenty of signs.
Born in Bethlehem, of the line of David, from Nazareth, John the Baptist
Mat. 7:28-29 → He spoke and taught like no other man before or since.
They were likely looking for some excuse to arrest him.
Matthew 12:14 → They were already seeking to destroy him.

Verse 2 → “He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is
red.”
“For the sky is red” → a pretty red sunset usually occurs on nice clear evenings
Cloudy and stormy evenings usually don’t have pretty sunsets.
White light is the combination of all colors.
Different colors of light have different wavelengths.
Light that comes to the earth, comes in a straight line.
ROYGBV → Red has a longer wavelength and violet has a shorter wavelength
Smaller wavelengths scatter more easily by the tiny particles in the atmosphere.
This is why the sky is blue.
In the evening, the sunlight travels farther through the air.
This causes almost complete scattering of short wavelengths, leaving only red.

Verse 3 → “And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye
can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?”
“lowring” → threatening clouds
“ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times”
“The signs of the times” → What were the times?
Israel had gone over 400 years without any word from the Lord.
Then John the Baptist comes, “The voice in the wilderness, “”Make straight a highway””
John the Baptist declares, “The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand”
John promises that one is going to come after him who is greater than him.
Daniel’s “70 Weeks of Years” prophecy is nearing the time for Messiah to be cut off.
The Pharisees and Sadducees were oblivious to this.
They overlooked the suffering servant prophecy and Jesus wasn’t what they wanted.
Even today, many people blind themselves to the evidence of God and his order for creation.
Romans 1:18-20 → Men have rejected the obvious signs of God’s power and creation.
For man to believe life can come from nothing is willful blindness.
Paul goes on to explain that they chose to glorify creation instead of the creator.
Idol worship used to be much more common and still is in some places.
The most absurd form of worship is the worship of self.
This view denies any higher power or authority; rejects duties.
Seeks only self satisfaction and is willing to sacrifice others.
When someone points out the chaos and destruction this view causes…
They ignore it and continue in willful blindness. (2 Timothy 3)

Verse 4 → “A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it,
but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.”
“A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign” → Interpretation is easier with inflection…
Matthew 12:38-39 → Almost the same conversation with them.
This wicked and adulterous generation was the Jews.
The majority of Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes had rejected him.
Many of the people had blinded their eyes and shut their eyes to understand him.
Depending on the inflection of this statement…
1) Jesus could simply be stating that they want a sign.
2) Jesus is stating only wicked generations seek after signs.
Option “1” may be a little more accurate.
God had given signs before, even at the request of people and the nation.
Yet, this generation in all their wickedness seeks after a sign.
Although, God has provided many signs as stated previously.
“there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas”
Jonas → Jonah (The exact same account as 12:39)
12:40 → “three days and three nights” → Pointing towards his death, burial, and resurrection.
This verse has caused a great deal of debate.
A great deal of time could be spent discussing the timing of Jesus’s last supper.
Some propose it was actually on Wednesday night.
If Jesus was arrested Thursday night and buried Friday afternoon…
At best, you can argue for only three days and two nights.
But… what if “the heart of the earth” wasn’t referring to his tomb?
The heart of the earth is never defined as the grave in scripture.
What if it means Jerusalem? The city which will be the capital city of all creation?
“The heart of the earth” could be Thursday evening through Sunday morning.
Three days and three nights.

Verse 5 → “And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.”
“the other side” → Of the Sea of Galilee (back toward Bethsaida)

Verse 6 → “Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the
Sadducees.”
“Leaven” → yeast used for making the bread rise
Remember, they had forgotten the bread.
Jesus is making an important point to not be desperate and follow after the religious leaders.

Verse 7 → “And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.”
They seem to take Jesus literally, because they forgot bread.
They likely interpreted Jesus as warning them not to accept bread from the religious leaders.
It is easy to poke fun at the disciples, but remember that they didn’t have the full picture.

Verse 8 → “Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among
yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?”
“O ye of little faith” → Jesus addressed the disciples in this manner on several occasions.
Ch. 6 → Sermon on the Mount; Ch. 8 → Jesus calms the storm
The lack of bread was probably a point of contention among the group. (Maybe playing the blame game)
They were so worried about the bread that they didn’t understand what Jesus was telling them.
The woman at Canaan knew what “dog” meant. (Her faith was called great.)

Verse 9 → “Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many
baskets ye took up?”

Verse 10 → “Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?”
Why would they be worried about food when they had witnessed these miracles?
Have we ever forgotten what God has done for us? (Maybe we have sinned and struggled with it.)
Christ has already taken care of that sin!

Verse 11 → “How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should
beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?”
“How is it that ye do not understand” → The disciples continually failed to see the big picture.
Jesus connects their little faith and lack of understanding.
If their faith, trust, and confidence in Jesus was great; they would not be concerned about food.
They would be looking to him for greater wisdom and power.
The Book of Acts shows just how far the disciples come in their faith!

Verse 12 → “Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the
doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.”
Doctrine and leaven are very similar. (It only takes a little to have a great impact.)
Once something is leavened, it cannot be unleavened.
Once someone is indoctrinated, it is very hard for them to change their way of thinking.
You must be sound in your doctrine so you are not deceived by the doctrine of others.
