01. Instructions for the Age of Grace part 04 (1 Corinthians 10:30-11:1)
**1 Corinthians 10:30 grace** is χάρις (charis), means God's free and undeserved favor.

• Because we are saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8--9), this means that our behavior does not determine salvation or even keep us saved! Grace stands directly opposite of works; you cannot mix the two.
****
• Romans 11:6-We have complete freedom in Jesus to sin, for if the choice to sin or not to sin were not an option, then grace would not be grace, for true grace demands freedom.

be a partaker is μετέχω (ĕtĕchō), from á, *with, denoting association*, and échō, have, thus it means to share, to take part in (cf. 1 Corinthians 9:12; 10:17; 10:21).
**
am I evil spoken** is βλασφημέω (ēmĕō), from ásphēmos, *blasphemous or a blasphemer*, means to speak evil of, to revile, or defame (cf. 1 Corinthians 4:13).
**
give thanks** is εὐχαριστέω (ĕucharistĕō), from ú, *well*, and áris, grace, means to be thankful.

• Paul is thankful for God's grace, which gives him freedom in Christ to be a partaker of the fulness of the earth (1 Corinthians 10:26; 10:28). Paul goes on to say that he doesn't want to abuse God's grace so that it will cause evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks.

• Paul does not abuse his liberty (1 Cor 10:30) that will disgrace the Lord and not praise Him.

1 Corinthians 10:31 all is πᾶς (pas) and means all things (Philippians 4:13).

glory is δόξα (doxa), means glory.

• Paul is writing about eating and drinking from an offering to an idol (1 Cor 10:19-29;), and in the freedom to do so, be careful that we don't use our liberty to be offensive to the weaker believer (1 Corinthians 8:1-13; Romans 14:19; 14:21; 15:1--2; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 4:29).

• These words of Paul can be used in all areas as a self-test to see if what we are doing is acceptable and pleasing to God (cf. 1 Corinthians 6:12; Colossians 3:17; Colossians 3:23).

1 Corinthians 10:32 none offence is ἀπρόσκοπος (ŏskŏpŏs), with the Greek prefix a-, ós, toward, against, and óptō, to cut or to strike, means not causing others to stumble.

• Found 3x in the Greek Scriptures: Acts 24:16; Philippians 1:10.

• Paul writes about this in 1 Corinthians 8:13 and Romans 14:13.

Jews (cf. 1 Corinthians 9:20), originally meant one from the Tribe of Judah. --26). It is in this context that we see this adjective of Jews applied throughout the Greek Scriptures, including here in our text by Paul.

to the Gentiles is Ἕλλην (ĕllēn), which is used to label those who are not Jewish (cf. Acts 16:1; 16:3;  Corinthians 1:22--24; 1 Corinthians 10:32; 12:13; Galatians 2:3; 3:28; Colossians 3:11).

• What does Paul mean in writing the church of God? Found 8x, 2x written by Paul discussing his persecution of the early church (1 Cor 15:9; Gal 1:13), once spoken by Paul (Acts 20:28) and 5x in Paul's epistles (1 Cor 1:2; 1 Corinthians 10:32; 11:22; 2 Cor 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:5).

• The key to figuring out who is the church of God, is in 1 Corinthians 1:2 where Paul describes the 2 groups of people in the Corinthian assembly. My theory is that the phrase the church of God is the local assembly (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:2).
**
• Paul is commanding that we and the Corinthians
Give **none offence, neither to the Jews (those who are still in Judaism), nor to the Gentiles, (those who are idolaters), nor to the church of God, (those who are in the local assembly there at Corinth):

1 Corinthians 10:33 Here is the crux of what Paul has been saying since 1 Corinthians 10:15 (cf. 1 Corinthians 9:19--23; 1 Corinthians 10:24; Romans 15:2--3).

**• Paul writes that he is not just commanding the Corinthian assembly and us today, but that he strives to not be offensive to the Jews**, the Greeks, and the church of God so that **please all ****men in all **things for the profit of many, that they may be saved.

• All that we do should be done with that other person's ultimate salvation as the motivation.

1 Corinthians 11:1 In context, this verse belongs to what Paul has been discussing since 1 Corinthians 10.

followers is μιμητής (ētēs), to mimic. Paul is saying that you follow by imitating. Paul commands them to be followers of him, something that he writes additionally in other epistles (1 Corinthians 4:16; Philippians 3:17; 1 Thessalonians 1:6; 2 Thessalonians 3:9; Hebrews 13:7).

• Paul commands the Corinthian assembly and us to follow him. The reason that Paul can be so bold to issue this command is that he is an apostle of Jesus (1 Corinthians 9:1--2).
