01. Chastened of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:31-32)
1 Corinthians 11:31 we would judge is διακρίνω (ō), from á, *denoting separation* and as a prefix, it is an intensifier, and ínō, meaning to divide, to separate, to make a distinction, to pronounce a judgment, to judge and never to damn to Hell, same as discerning in 1 Corinthians 11:29.
**
judged** is κρίνω (ō). Paul writes about each man examining himself in 1 Cor 11:28.
**
1 Corinthians 11:32 we are chastened** is παιδεύω (ĕuō), from ís, *child*, thus it means to chastise or correct a child.

we should...be condemned is κατακρίνω (ō), from κατά (kata), as a prefix in the Greek is the ultimate intensifier and κρίνω (ō).

• Paul writes that the Lord is punishing the Corinthians for their sins (God's Revelation of Transition).

• In the Dispensation of the Law, it was common for God to reward and punish His people with prosperity or stagnation (Deuteronomy 11:13--28). When the 2 sons of Aaron (Nadab and Abihu) deliberately disobeyed the instructions from God about the sacrifices (Leviticus 10:1--3), and the account of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-11; where all 4 were killed instantly.

• More examples of the punishment of God on His people because of sin: (Exodus 15:26; Numbers 20:12; Numbers 20:24; Numbers 21:6--9; 2 Samuel 12:14--18; 1 Kings 13:21--24; Psalm 38:1--8; Psalm 78:30--31; Psalm 89:31--34; Amos 3:2).

• In Acts 13:38-39 we see the 1st occurrence of grace alone (cf. Ephesians 3:1--6).

• The Hebrew Scriptures, the Gospels, Acts 1-13, and Hebrews to Revelation are Law or the Future Kingdom of God. In the Gospels, we see that Jesus was a minister of the circumcision (Romans 15:8). The Book of James is a perfect example of Law (James 2:14-26). Paul in fact spoke two different Gospels, depending on who the audience was (Galatians 2:7--9). Today in the Age of Grace it doesn't matter who you are, we are all saved by grace through faith (Galatians 3:28; Ephesians 2:8--9).
**
• With that foundation, what we see here in our text is that God was striking the Corinthians with infirmities, diseases, and even death because they took the Lord's Supper
unworthily, just like with Nadab and Abihu (Lev 10:1--3) and Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11).

• These experiences are no longer seen today in this Age of Grace, (no one dying in a church service for lying, etc.) because we live in grace. We still suffer the consequences of sin, but we don't live in fear that we will be struck dead because of our sin!

world **is κόσμος (ŏsmŏs), and it is used to describe the world in an orderly arrangement, much like a decoration. It is used to describe the order of the world and the entirety of God's creation (Genesis 1-2), and not chaos which is brought about by man. κόσμος (ŏsmŏs) is the complete opposite of chaos.

• What Paul writes here in 1 Corinthians 11:31-32 is more proof that 1 Corinthians 11:29 is not damnation to Hell, for the damnation or literally the judgment from the Lord is a reprimand or a rebuke for the Corinthians.

• Hell is not just a reprimand, but for those who deny Jesus is Lord (Revelation 20:10-15).

• Notwithstanding, even in this Age of Grace, we as Christians today should judge and examine our own behavior to line it up with God's character.

**02. **Be Patient (1 Corinthians 11:33)
1 Corinthians 11:33 when ye come together is συνέρχομαι (ĕrchŏmai), from ún, *together with or together*, and érchomai, to come, meaning to come together in cooperation.

tarry is ἐκδέχομαι (ĕkdĕchŏmai), from ek, out, and échomai, *to receivebe patient*.

•Paul is writing specifically to the Corinthian assembly to say, be patient, don't rush into eating the Lord's Supper.

03. Eat At Home (1 Corinthians 11:34)
hunger is πεινάω (ĕinaō), meaning *to suffer hunger, to be famished, starved* (1 Cor 4:11).
**
condemnation** is κρίμα (krima), and the suffix *-ma* indicates the outcome of a judgment, the same word as damnation in 1 Corinthians 11:29.
**
will I set in order** is διατάσσω (ō), from á, *through* and ássō, to arrange in an organized fashion.
**
• Paul closes this section by writing about what was happening in the Corinthian assembly at that specific time.

• The Corinthian assembly was partaking of the Lord's Supper in a disrespectful way when they gorged at the Agape Feast (1 Corinthians 11:21--22).
**
• Here is another time we rightly divide (2 Timothy 2:15), as this was specifically written regarding a situation in the Corinthian assembly, it does not directly apply to us.
